Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two
Woolaston 3-1 Whitecroft
-----
WOOLASTON extended their lead at the top of the Northern Senior League second division with a comeback 3-1 derby win over Whitecroft.
The Forest village side is now a healthy eight points clear of Cheltenham Civil Service who won 2-1 at Lydney Town Reserves.
Whitecroft started the day in second and were given an early boost when they took the lead from the penalty spot after 10 minutes.
Woolaston had gone close twice before the spot kick, but levelled the game just before half-time.
With a couple of minutes to go before the half-time whistle James Burchill connected with a cross from Jack Harvey,
And although the ball was parried by the Whitecroft keeper, Burchill made no mistake with the rebound, looping the ball into the net.
The division’s pacesetters looked more comfortable after the break and went into the lead on the hour.
A cross from Adam Ellis was curled around the keeper by Richard Lloyd to make the score 2-1.
And Woolaston made sure of the three points with a third goal in the last 10 minutes of play with Dan Saunders hitting the corner of the net from 20 yards out.
Woolaston manager Andrew Wenzel – who is in his first season in charge – said he was delighted by his side’s performance and the three ‘team’ goals.
He said: “I asked them to go out and show intent, which is exactly what they did. The work rate from everyone was tremendous and I couldn’t be more proud.
“In the last three games we’ve struggled and not shown our potential but we showed real hunger and fight in this one. We were missing a few players which shows we have strength in depth.”
