LYDNEY Town under-11s retained the Arthur Stiley Memorial Trophy after beating Eckington 4-2 on penalties.
In their Cheltenham Youth League games this year Lydney first thumped the Cheltenham side 6-1 but lost the return 3-1 – so the cup final had the hallmark of a tough encounter.
The game was played at the ground of Bishop’s Cleeve – who Lydney beat in last year’s final.
Despite their workrate and having around 60 per cent of the ball, Lydney could not make the breakthrough.
With minutes to go Bailey James fed the ball through to Louis Callus who was denied by a superb tackle and so the game went to penalties.
George King stepped up to take the first penalty but the keeper saved it and the Foresters went a goal behind when Eckington’s first kick found the target.
Bailey James equalised for Lydney and then Taylor Morris got them back into the game with a save to keep the score 1-1.
Captain Aston Jeffs and Louis Callus scored their penalties but Morris made another save to make the score 2-3.
Joe Moore scored the decisive penalty to make it 4-2 and ensure the win for Lydney.
The Lydney squad was: Taylor Morris, James Roberts, Toby Bendall, Mac Dickinson, Aston Jeffs, Bailey James, Billy Wilson, Louis Callus, George King, Joe Moore, Toby Vaughn, Rory Davis, Charlie Nyland and Jack Stewart.
