Lydney Town 1-2 Abingdon United

-----

LYDNEY Town had a precious point snatched from them after conceding in injury time.

The result leaves Lydney flirting with the relegation zone, although they have between three and six games in hand over their nearest rivals.

The visitors probably travelled from Oxfordshire with a degree

of confidence, having beaten their hosts twice this season already.

Lydney started brightly but the visiting keeper was rarely threatened and it was the visitors who opened the scoring.

Richard Thomas in the Lydney goal turned a drive wide and Abingdon scored from the resulting corner after 28 minutes.

Frankie Johnson went narrowly wide and five minutes later it looked as though he had found the equaliser – but the ref had blown for a foul and awarded Lydney the free-kick.

From the set-piece Declan Morley-Lyne had the keeper beaten but the ball came agonisingly off the woodwork.

The pressure paid off a couple of minutes before half-time with good work by man-of-the-match Liam Sheppard finding Keelan Hamblett.

His cross was flicked on by Pete Macklin and Johnson scored from close range to level the game.

Josh Bennai, who replaced Owen Williams, and Toumani Sidibi, who came on for Johnson, injected some pace during the second half.

Niall Halford, who came on for the last 10 minutes for Macklin, sent a Sidibi cross flying over the crossbar.

The twist of the knife came in added time and started with a free-kick in a dangerous position for Lydney.

Abingdon countered and John Dennis, in space, sent the ball over Thomas’s head and into the far corner of the net to deny Lydney a point they deserved and needed.
