Whitehouse Press North Gloucestershire League Division Four
Weston-under Penyard 3
Ross Juniors 2
-------
BOTH teams went into this local derby, held in Weston, knowing the result would have a huge bearing on the final destination of the fourth division championship.
For the home side a defeat would end their title ambitions in their first season in the league while for Ross anything but a win would mean they were no longer masters of their own destiny.
Ross went into their final game of the season three points ahead of their Herefordshire neighbours and the result of Saturday’s encounter means both sides are now on 57 points.
But with Juniors enjoying a 31-point goal difference advantage, Weston go into their final game – a trip to Sedbury on Saturday, May 21 – needing at least a draw.
James Reid put Weston ahead on five minutes but Ross showed they were prepared for a fight with an equaliser just three minutes later.
Reid restored his side’s advantage midway through the half but Ross came back again and the teams went in level at half-time.
Both sides looked for the winner in the second half and it was Weston who were celebrating at the final whistle thanks to an Adam Dewitt goal 10 minutes from time.
Weston’s manager, Steve Salmon, said they had enjoyed their first season in the Gloucestershire league and would go to Sedbury looking for the win.
