A PERFECT winning record of 22 victories in 22 matches proved a smash with the judges, as George Ieli landed the Gloucestershire Player of the Year award.

The 24-year-old Lydney Tennis Club star was unbeatable in the Gloucestershire Summer League doubles season, and would have shared it with his Lydney B partner but for Matt Leach missing just one of the 22 matches.

George started playing at the club when he was nine, and was coached by Tim Smart and later by Fraser Drew.

Club spokesperson Julia Goss said: “We could see his raw talent back then and he has matured into an excellent all-rounder and first rate team player.

“He’s a real asset to the club and we’re all proud of him.”

George recently completed a degree in Sports Science and Development and is now working locally while playing in the Mixed Winter League in Lydney’s B team, where he and his partner Barbara Firman are doing well so far.
