UNDY golfer Josh Davies was crowned Principality Junior Wales Open champion after a two-stroke victory on the course which hosted the Ryder Cup.

The 16 year-old came back from a shaky start having bogeyed the opening hole and he finished a superb round on 76 at the Celtic Manor's Twenty Ten course despite adding a double bogey on the 16th.

Although the Celtic Manor is Josh's home club he did not have too much in the way of home advantage when he took on Joey Lamb.

The Wales junior international said: "This is by far the biggest tournament I've ever won and I'm really pleased with the way I finished.

"I think the nerves set in when I had another double bogey on the 16th hole but I held myself together with two pars to finish."

The Wales international got his tournament off to a dream start when he achieved his first competitive hole-in-one at Builth Wells over Easter in a regional qualifier for the grand final at the Celtic Manor.

Josh will see him upgrade his Celtic Manor membership from the Roman Road and Montgomerie courses to the Twenty Ten club where he has won a year of golf.

Chepstow's St Pierre club had two winners in John Maguire who took the under-18 boys' net with 86-9-77 and Megan Smith who took the under-15 girls' gross with 90.

The prizes were presented by European Tour pro Rhys Davies who spent the day encouraging the young competitors.

Rhys said: "It was great for the development of my game to play in big junior tournaments like this one,

"When you get to play on a course which you've seen on television in an event like the Ryder Cup with the world's top players battling it out, it really inspires you.

"I'm sure all the youngsters competing here will gain from their experience and want to achieve more."

Graeme Yorston, chief operating officer of the Principality Building Society added: "We're delighted to sponsor this competition and support the Celtic Manor Resort in developing the next generation of Welsh golfing talent.

"Just last year, we had Amy Boulden as the Principality Junior Wales Open girls' champion and this summer she was part of the Great Britain and Ireland which won the Curtis Cup."
