CHEPSTOW’S Kieran Woods was named best boxer by the officials at a tournament on Saturday.
The show, organised by Chepstow Boxing Club, featured boxers from Ireland, south Wales, Gloucester, Bristol and Hereford.
The bouts were fairly evenly matched with almost all the decisions being split between the judges.
Around 100 spectators were at the Severn Bridge Social Club in Bulwark and gave vocal support to all the boxers.
Kieran beat Nathan Rich of The Factory, Gloucester and his technique impressed the officials so much they awarded him the boxer of the night trophy which was presented by Jasmine Redman, the granddaughter of the Chepstow club’s founder Terry Dymock.
There were also wins for Chepstow’s Zak Parsons and Jude Holmes while Scott Marchant and Aiden Hampsey both lost on split decisions.
Cousins Patrick Larkin and Pat Mullane – the current Welsh novice champion – boxed an exhibition demonstrating their skills while Luke Connor also took part in an exhibition.
The club’s head coach Steve Woods said he was “massively proud” of his boxers.
He said: “It was a fantastic evening with an electric atmosphere.
“Most of the bouts were very evenly matched and there was some very good boxing.”
The card had to be revised late on after the English championships were rescheduled meaning that several clubs had to pull out.
Mr Woods said: “We had a quality show and special thanks must go to the two Patricks who showed a huge amount of skill and control.”
The club welcomed members of the Olympic Boxing Club from Mullingar in Ireland and a presentation was made to their coaches during the interval.
The audience was delighted by nine-year-old James Annalls and six-year-old Terry Mullane who went in the ring to show their skill with the pads with the help of coach Rameece Rouf.”
