MEMBERS of the Lydney Boxing Club put up a good fight at its boxing show with Liam O'Hare winning the Gavin Childs memorial shield.

Also present was Lydney lad Ben Vaughan who boxed Manchester-based Hussnain Parvair. The 22-year-old lost on points but still retains the belt he won at Bristol Hotel as Parvair is not from the area.

His coach Bry Higgs said: "Ben was recently awarded the western counties development belt at under 52kg. The belt was brought out by the England ABA and is awarded to those who have fought ten contests but not at senior championship level. He beat Brad Bugdale from Plymouth on unanimous decision and has to defend the belt three times to keep it for good.

"The boxing show saw an excellent night of results for the club. Liam O'Hare was picked by judges as the best Lydney boxer of the evening and so received the Gavin Childs memorial shield.

"Gavin used to box for us and was tragically killed in a road accident on the A48 in 1998."

Among the winners was Dean Barnett, who weighs 83kg, and boxed out of his skin to win on split decision against Steve Edmunds from Cwmbran, South Wales.

Sixteen-year-old Jaiden Potter (84kg) had a touch of beginner's luck as he thrashed Cae John Jacobs, from Penaber in Wales, to win his first contest.

Bry added: "These two 16-year-olds showed heart and skill and determination in a very close contest with Potter winning on a split decision. Jaiden was presented with the Light Fantastic trophy for the best junior prospect and will box again on May 28 in Wales."
