OPENER Malith Madurasinghe hit 71 to lay the foundations for Chepstow's three-wicket victory over visitors Pentyrch on Saturday.

The visitors had slumped to 28-3 thanks to fine bowling from Rhodri Fawsitt (10-3-12-2) and Tyler Morgan-Huggett (8-2-25-1) but Basharat Malik (51) and skipper Gareth Gardiner (33) steadied the ship.

David Tallis weighed in with 25 not out but ran out of partners as Chepstow skipper Jason Dobbie (10-2-24-3) got to work, removing Malik soon after he had registered his half-century before taking a smart caught and bowled to dismiss Scott Matthews.

Mitchell Harris (10-9-33-1) removed Gardiner with another caught and bowled as the skip looked to emulate his teammate's achievement.

In Chepstow's reply, Madurasinghe – who had not had the best of afternoons with the ball – buckled down with the bat.

He accelerated after losing David Bennett for 25 (lbw b Peter Grossett) with the score at 85-4 and steered his side to 157 before being caught by Gardiner off the bowling of David Tallis.

Youngster Josh Daniel hit 29 before being bowled by Tallis but it was enough to see Chepstow home.

In the Seconds encounter, Chepstow won the toss and asked Pentyrch to bat on an under-prepared wicket.

From 20 without loss Pentyrch collapsed to 60 all out, Dan Price (5-23) doing the damage ably supported by Amit Kriplani (4-7).

Chepstow decided all-out attack was their best option and reached their target for the loss of three wickets - Paul Bennett (26 not out) and Dan Price (21) the main contributors.

Sunday's Welsh Cup home tie against Neyland was cancelled as the visitors declined to travel so Chepstow progress to the next round.
