CHEPSTOW boxer Pat Mullane is the new Welsh champion and now he has his sights on the British title.

The 13-year-old won the Welsh title at the recent championships in Swansea and head coach at the Chepstow gym, Steve Woods, reckons he has a good chance for the British title later this year.

Pat, who joined Chepstow Amateur Boxing Club seven months ago, boxes in the 52kgs weight class.

In the run up to the Welsh championships he had beaten three former title holders, said Mr Woods.

He said: “Only one lad in Britain has won more bouts at his age – he has 14 to Pat’s 11.

“I think Pat is in with a really good chance of the British championship.”

In the Welsh championship Pat had to overcome two opponents with very different styles and adapted very well, said Mr Woods.

Pat’s ambition is to turn professional and he thanked his trainers for the work they do for him and the others at the club, which is based in Lower Church Street.

The teenager is the latest in a line of champions produced by the club.

Among them is Rosie Eccles who started her career in Chepstow and has been selected for the Welsh Commonwealth Games squad and will be competing in the British championships.
