THE INAUGURAL Rifles handicap steeplechase trophy was presented to winning owner David Sewell by the regiment's colonel commandant General Sir Nick Parker.

The nine-year-old chestnut gelding Oh Crick won the feature race of the Rifles' charity raceday at Chepstow Racecourse.

Winning jockey Wayne Hutchinson and assistant trainer Noel Williams were presented with regimental cufflinks by Colour Serjeant Danny Spencer.

They were welcomed to the winners' podium by a fanfare from the Rifles' Salamanca band.

The eight-race card was in aid of The Rifles' Care for Casualties and the course donated part of the proceeds from its Silks restaurant package.

General Sir Nick Parker said: "It has been an excellent day's racing here."

The Rifles, whose 1st battalion is stationed at Beachley Barracks, was formed five years ago this month as a new regiment.

During that time around 60 Riflemen have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq and around 30 others have lost limbs while others have suffered life-changing injuries including blindness.

The Care for Casualties appeal supports wounded Riflemen and the families and the bereaved.
