CHEPSTOW boxer Rosie Eccles won the elite senior Welsh title in front of a packed audience at the Wales Institute of Sport in Cardiff – and now has a crack at the British crown.

The 18-year-old came out in an aggressive manner, forcing her opponent, Tredegar's Natasha Williams, back into her corner with an onslaught of punches.

Rosie will compete for the British title in May.

The devastating show of speed and power was so great that the referee called a halt to the bout towards the end of the first round handing the title to Chepstow's first female boxer.

Twenty four hours earlier at the same venue, Chepstow's Aiden Hamsey was denied a youth title on points against four-times Welsh champion, twice British silver medallist and current Great Britain squad member Micky McDonagh.

Although Aiden probably took the second round it was the more experienced Haverfordwest boxer who took the fair unanimous points decision.

The Chepstow club's head coach, Steve Woods, said: "I'm extremely pleased with both performances – Chepstow Boxing Club has had a fantastic season so far and hopefully it will long continue."

Next out boxing for Chepstow will be 16-year-old James Hobbs and 23-year-old Sean Gibbs for a competition in Weston-super-Mare.
