SHANE Rudge (29), from Newnham, had a terrific time at the AMA International Karate Championships at Sheffield.

Shane usually coaches world champion Amy Wright-Hamilton but at this event he was chosen to represent England in the international squad battling more than 450 competitors from all over Europe.

First Shane won his own individual weight category then went on to win the open weight ippon-kumite section and managed to get a bronze in the men's team.

Then to cap it all he was awarded The Fighter of the Day trophy from AMA president Peter Allen, Seventh Dan.

Shane trains with the Bukindai karate Association and coaches alongside his father Shihan Chris Rudge Sixth Dan at Heywood sports centre Cinderford, Lydney sport centre and Five Acres sport centre, Coleford.

Shane must now prepare for the European championships in Scotland in May.
