FORMED only last season when they gained instant promotion, Viney's reserve team stand on the verge of a remarkable achievement. If all goes to plan they could become the first team ever to win their league, the County Cup, the F J Pope Cup and the West Dean Charities Cup.
The Charities has already been sewn up and another step towards the F J Pope Cup was achieved at Tutshill on Saturday when Viney overcame a stubborn and hardworking Tidenham team to win a place in the semi-finals.
Proudly top of North Gloucester League division 3, Viney are beginning to feel the pinch as their remarkable run of cup successes means they are building up a backlog of fixtures.
"Fortunately we have a large squad and we are getting stronger and better," says Viney manager Wayne Nyland.
Defeated just once in the league, Nyland is confident that the team – a mix of promising youngsters and experienced older players – will give a powerful account of themselves as the season heads towards its climax.
He says five or six of the younger players could well make the grade in Viney's senior team, among them Dwayne Morris, Jordan Locke and Chris Naylor. They benefit, he adds, from playing with experienced campaigners like Simon Jones and Tom Vincent.
Formed only a season ago, Nyland oversaw a team which gained immediate promotion. "It's been remarkable really. We have gone from strength to strength and, like all teams when you are successful, people want to play for you. We had six players on our bench last week," he said.
Nyland says a check through the records has failed to find another team to lift all four titles in one season.
"We are in with a chance but I'm not counting our chickens yet. There's a lot more work to be done and the players are looking forward to the County Cup game at Viney Hill on March 3," he says.
Tidenham, he said, gave his team a tough test. "They had some good young lads and they worked very hard in difficult conditions," he said.
Viney opened the scoring with a first-half penalty converted by Simon James and wrapped up their victory with goals from Chris Naylor and James Willetts.
