UNDY Athletic ended a run of three straight defeats with a much-needed 2-1 win at Caerau Ely.

The return to form lifts them to sixth in Welsh League Division Two, keeping them ahead of neighbours Caldicot Town on goal difference.

The visitors survived a late Caerau fight-back to cling on to a victory that was secured through goals from James Barnes and debutant Andrew Larcombe.

The former Llanwern man was one of two players making their first appearance for Athletic with striker Michael Jones also coming in to a line-up missing Adrian Evans and Wayne Morley.

The debutants played vital roles in the victory with Larcombe opening the scoring from a corner in the 32nd minute with a well-timed run into the six yard box and a neat right-footed finish. And despite failing to get onto the score-sheet Jones provided a constant threat up front with his strength, speed and selfless running earning him the man-of-the-match award.

Despite creating a number of decent chances Undy failed to add to their 1-0 lead and until mid-way through the second half.

On 67 minutes a neat interchange in the box between Hooper and Jones created the opportunity for Barnes to drive home from 10 yards.

At the other end Undy rarely looked troubled with the back four and defensive midfield man Kel Stevens looking solid and assured.

But that changed with just five minutes left to play when a Careau free kick was allowed to drop to a striker's feet in the area and his turn and shot was put away.

The goal proved the catalyst for a late surge of pressure, with the home side laying siege to the Undy area for the remaining minutes. Mark Crook's men were now defending for their lives but it looked to be in vain as Caerau put the ball into the net with two minutes to go. Thankfully for the visiting fans a linesman's flag spared their blushes and the goal was ruled out for offside.

Undy hung onto claim a valuable victory which they hope will get their season back on track.

They will have to be at their best to build on the win with a tough month ahead that includes games against three of the top four starting with third-placed Aberbargoed Buds next week.
