MATHERN Vagabonds fell victim to their own success with two missing on Welsh international duty and two being at an under-18s semi-final with sides they run.
The Vagabonds had several other players missing for the Wales Veterans' League game with Cardiff side Rumney.
Manager Jim Edwards was forced to play in goal after losing several players with Mothers' Day commitments.
He said: "We struggled to cobble together a balanced side with two players missing on Welsh International duty, two having to attend a semi-final with an Under 18s side that they run and several others unavailable,"
Mathern went close on 30 minutes when Steve Owen's 25-yarder shook the bar with the keeper well beaten.
The winning goal came in the 70th minute when Rumney striker Jason Jones broke away and despite the keeper getting a hand to the shot, the ball spun into the net.
Mathern have six called up for Wales internationals next weekend - a record for one club.
They are: Mike Blackaby, Paul Stadden, Ian Thompson, Jim Edwards, Roy Jennings and Roy Poyner.
