I KNEW the Forest as an undergraduate in 1950. Since

then, I have worked worldwide as a professional forester

for 35 years and, since my retirement, have resided here.

I have had ample opportunity to observe, in several

countries, a failure to protect State forests and its results.

These have always been adverse, both for the local

inhabitants and the country as a whole, and sometimes

disastrous.

I do not believe, as has been suggested, the a local

charity could buy and maintain any but a small part of the

Forest. Any other buyer would expect to make a profit and

this could not be done without completely changing the

character of the Forest.
