I have just read the article in the current Review reference the lorry losing it’s roof, and yet again the usual critics are complaining about either the road or the bridges.

It couldn’t of course be anything to do with lack of attention by drivers? That might be too easy.

Today, as I do three or so times a week, I have driven under all the bridges down this stretch of the A48, and I can assure everyone that they are all adequately posted with warnings as to height in the centre, and the fact that there may be oncoming traffic in the middle of the road.

A driver should know the height of his vehicle, and if he does not perhaps he should not be driving.

The only times I have found these bridges a problem, and I drive a car, is when just as I am approaching the “can’t-stop-in-time” point I find a lorry in the middle of the road, travelling through at 40 to 50 mph. I would stress that this has only happened a few times in the 13 years I have driven that road.

Just a thought too. We now have masses of foreign lorries on our roads, and I doubt if all the drivers can read English adequately. As the lorry on this occasion was operated by a UK company I doubt that this is the case this time.

In the last three weeks or so, we have read that three buses in the London area have also hit low bridges. Come on, it can’t always be the road’s fault.

Drivers, we all need to accept responsibility for our own actions. Drive according to the condition of the road at all times, and stop trying to shed the blame.
