FUTURE housing developments of 1,900 dwel-

lings at Lydney and 512 at Chepstow have raised concerns of additional traffic using the A48 road through Chepstow causing more congestion as little or no road improvements are planned.

Several bypass schemes for Chepstow have been made over the years. A further suggestion now follows.

Upgrade the road from Tesco traffic lights to the railway station. Construct a fly-over to cross the railway line on the downside of the footbridge (no higher than the footbridge deck). Build a new road through the disused shunting yard towards the railway cutting near the old quarry and carry the road on trestles over the railway through the cutting and descending to ground level in the vicinity of Warren Slade woods. On embankments, continue the road along the landward side of the railway, under the M48 Wye Bridge thence connecting to the road on the industrial estate which connects to New House M48 roundabout.

There will be adverse comments but the foregoing sorts out the congestion problems, disposes of steep hills, and uses land with little public occupation and use.?Additionally the disused shunting yard could become a car park, bus station or both and the pollution situation on Mount Pleasant would be minimised if not abolished.

The cost? Not cheap but not as much as some projects envisaged in various parts of the country.
