A LONE volunteer who helps run a popular Caldicot park has criticised Monmouthshire Council for trimming the number of grass cuts.

Chris Mayo, opens and closes Birbeck Park and keeps an eye on the play area, says the overlong grass could pose a safety risk.

Monmouthshire Council said budget cuts had made the reduction necessary but staff had been told to be aware of safety issues.

Mrs Mayo voiced her concern to Caldicot Town Council who agreed to write to the county council.

She said: "The number of grass cuts by Monmouthshire has been cut. We are paying the same council tax but getting less of a service.

"The grass grows and if you have dog mess or a broken bottle they can't be seen."

"They are cutting back on things people can't see.

"I notice it because I go to the park daily. It is a safety issue - lots of families bring their children to the park.

"I used to be paid to open and close the park and I don't mind doing it on a voluntary basis but I don't think the council should be making cuts where children's safety might be affected."

Town councillor Wyndham Conniff said: "It is appalling that in an area where children play that this sort of risk is allowed."

A spokesman for Monmouthshire Council said: "The number of cuts at Birbeck Park was reduced to 11 last March because of cuts to the council's budget.

"Safety is a priority and staff who are working in the park are told to be aware of any potential issues."
