A BID to build an Aldi store in Coleford will be decided by all 48 members of the Forest Council next week.
The unusual move came about after the council’s planning committee failed to come to a decision at its meeting in September when it considered the proposal for a store at Tufthorn Avenue.
Planning officials have recommended the scheme is refused planning permission because of concerns over the impact on the town centre but local councillors have said there is ’overwhelming’ support from local people.
Two businesses have opposed the plan, claiming it would harm the town centre and would deter future investment in the traditional shopping area.
At the planning committee meeting, the recommendation to refuse the plan was voted down – but then a motion to approve it also hit the buffers after councillors were warned the matter could end up in court if permission was granted.
As a result the scheme for the 19,418 sq ft (1,804sq m) store will go before the full council for determination next Thursday (October 20).
