A COLEFORD army cadet who helped an elderly woman who had collapsed has been named a Young First Aider of the Year.

Cadet Lance Corporal Micaela Meikle of the Coleford platoon was recongised for her actions at the Three Counties Show last year.

The 16-year-old went into action when the woman collapsed and was turning blue and nobody else was helping.

The presentation was made by Colonel Lance Ranson, Commandant of Gloucestershire Army Cadet Force when he attended the platoon's recent annual inspection.

Second Lieutenant Mark Evans, detachment commander for Coleford platoon, said he was proud that Micaela had been able to use her first aid training so effectively in a real situation.

"The fact that she was trained and she knew what to do and didn't panic, that's a great achievement," he said.

Further presentations were also made to cadet involved in representing Gloucestershire and the South West in various sporting events.
