YOUNGSTERS planning to end their time at secondary school with a mass booze-up have had their wings clipped by police.

Officers from Caldicot and Chepstow, along with special constables, seized nigh-on a pubload of bottles, cans and spirits from Caldicot school leavers. It's a seizure they say probably prevented an outbreak of anti-social and rowdy behaviour as seen in previous years.

In the past, school leavers day in the town has been overshadowed by criminal damage and persistent underage drinking.

This time though, the police spoke to all off-licences in Caldicot asking them to be vigilant and on leaving day itself confiscated alcohol from youths.

In total the alcohol seized was 20 cans and 47 bottles of lager, 14 cans and four bottles of cider, a bottle of wine, 13 bottles of alcopops and 10 bottles of spirits.

Police sergeant for Caldicot, Roland Giles, said: "We did seize a large amount of alcohol from underage drinkers and feel that this prevented later problems of anti-social and rowdy behaviour.

"With the summer months approaching we would ask parents to help us by not buying alcohol for their children. There are serious health implications for the children and underage drinking and anti-social behaviour affects the whole community."
