REAL ale fans have raised a glass to a town centre ’micro-pub’ by giving it a top award for the second year running.

The Queen’s Head in Moor Street, Chepstow, has been named the Campaign for Real Ale’s Gwent Town Pub of the Year 2017, voted for by nearly 700 members.

It was the very first ‘micro-pub’ in Gwent, with a single room, and no space for gaming machines, juke box or pool table.

A framed certificate was presented to landlord Glen Ellis by local CAMRA chairman Martyn Groucutt at a packed pub, which was the very first ‘micro’ licensed premises in Gwent.

Martyn said: "This is a fantastic achievement. A year ago, when the pub won the award for the first time, it had only recently opened and was already known locally for the superb quality and range of the beers on sale.

“I used to go round saying ‘Have you tried The Queen’s Head yet?’ Now, a year on, people come up to me from all over Gwent telling me how great the place is. Glen has a very high standard for any pub that wants to challenge him.’

It was full for the presentation and Glen had six real ales, all from Welsh independent breweries, on sale.

Glen said that when he won last year it was one element of what turned out to be a fantastic year.

His first child was born, his football team, Leicester City, won the Premiership, and he won the CAMRA award.

This year he wasn’t ready for another baby with little Ivy growing up fast, his team didn’t do so well, but he was thrilled that he still had the third element in winning the CAMRA award again.
