MEMBERS of the Forest of Dean branch of the Glosters Regimental Association, known locally as the 'Back Badge Club' are preparing for the annual celebration of 'Back Badge Day' which marks an historic event that took place on March 21, 1801, during the Battle of Alexandria.

The 28th Foot (North Gloucestershire), later to become the Gloucestershire Regiment, were engaging the French from the front and flanks when the French cavalry charged the 28th from the rear. The Regiment broke with tradition when their Commanding Officer gave the order 'Rear Rank 28th Right about Face' thus taking the French Cavalry by complete surprise. the 28th won the day and subsequently earned themselves the unique distinction of wearing two cap badges, one at the front and one at the rear, the only Regiment in the British army so to do.

There are almost 200 former members of the Glosters living in the Forest of Dean area and former Sergeant Major, Craig Risbey of Whitecroft, hopes that many of the Foresters will be joining him and other former members of the Regiment at the Naval Club in Gloucester for a free social to mark this event on the evening of the March 22. Transport from the Forest will be organised.

Details can be hand from Craig Risbey on 01594 560260 or Richard Reid on 01594 834510. – Phil Miller, vice-chairman, Forest of Dean Branch RGBW Regimental Association.
