WITH regard to the article about Wye Valley churches, and to bring the information up to date with regard to Llandogo/Tintern Parish...

Whitebrook Chapel closed about five years ago and is now a private residence. The village of Whitebrook was an important paper-making centre and the industrial sites are still very much in evidence, though now on private land. They can, however, been seen from the road through the village. The mill owner's houses at the top of the village have what were reservoirs in their grounds which fed the Whitebrook stream and ensured a power supply for the mills downstream.

Llandogo Church is open daily. It contains some fine wall paintings in the chancel in arts and crafts style which are unique and which were restored with the help of a grant from Cadw. Although the building is recent in church terms (1860) the site is ancient, as indicated by its circular, walled churchyard. The legend of St. Oudoceus is depicted on the front of the pulpit. This is believed to be the only church dedicated to this saint. The minister here is Rev. John Dearnley.

Tintern Church is a little jewel right on the banks of the Wye, also open daily. At present solutions are being investigated to deal with the threat of flooding when the Wye, which is tidal up to Llandogo, comes up high enough for wellies to be the dress for Sunday worship! The minister here is Rev. Norah Hill.

Visitors to both churches are warmly welcomed and invited to take advantage of the facilities available. More detailed information is on hand in the buildings. – Jane Avery, Woodside, Parkend Walk, Coalway.
