THE founder of Merry Den Care in Cinderford has won the prestigious 'Contribution to the Community' award at the Gloucestershire Women in Business Awards.

Denise Leighton collected the award at a ceremony at Cheltenham Racecourse.

She has dedicated the last 25 years of her life to care work and set up Merry Den Care in 2004 to provide specialist care and supported living for adults with learning and physical difficulties.

"It was enough of a shock to become a finalist in the awards, let alone winning!" said Denise.

"I really do have to thank my husband and co-worker Dave who supports me, as well as my brilliant staff who I wouldn't be able to do this without. I also want to thank the service users for being an absolute pleasure to work with each day."

Merry Den Care has a team of dedicated carers in the local area and has a total of six residential properties housing 18 service users. They have also built a brand new block of flats which will house a further eight people.

Denise and her homes were the subject of a Review centre page spread on March 9.

Merry Den Care was founded in 2004. Denise started out as a support worker and is now director of Merry Den Care which is continuing to grow and succeed

Each home at Merry Den is tailored to the needs of the residents. The service users are also encouraged to decorate their homes how they wish to really make them feel at home.

Activities at Merry Den include visiting local day centres or activity centres, sports, college courses, special occasions/holidays and some residents choose to participate in voluntary or paid work.
