BAKERS across the Forest and Wye Valley got busy producing delicious cakes to raise money for cancer charity Macmillan.
Groups, schools and businesses in the area got together for Macmillan’s annual World’s Biggest Coffee morning event.
The Dean Academy in Lydney organised a ‘bake off’ which was won by finance assistant Emma Day who baked brownies using Oreo biscuits.
The school’s assistant director of learning support who organised the bake-off, Anna McCoy, said: “It was a huge success, the entries were amazing – the student leadership team had a very difficult task in judging the delicious bakes.
“Thank you to everyone who donated, baked or ate cake for Macmillan Cancer Support. I would like to thank all the staff who helped make the day a huge success.”
The school raised £120 for Macmillan.
At Joy’s Lounge, a centre for people and families affected by dementia in Chepstow, staff were joined by soldiers from 1 Rifles based at Beachley.
The prize in the raffle at Drybrook-based builders’ merchants Hale and Co was a cake featuring the company’s logo.
Local MP Jessica Morden was among the guests at an event in memory of Hayley Wood and Maureen Greenway held at Caldicot Castle.
The Labour MP for Newport East said: “A big thank you to Ann Wood for organising, Kay Harris for the cakes and John Thomas for playing the harp.”
The event raised more than £700.
The cake was made and iced by Debbie Brooks, whose husband Matt works for the company.
Dozens of people supported the coffee morning at Aylburton Village Hall and an event at the King’s bar in Lydney was also well-supported.
