AS the finishing touches are taking place on the new, re-designed, extention to the Co-op Superstore in?Coleford, I am completely disgusted about the awful architecture of the entrance tower to the shop.
For the past month or so I have been looking at the poster images of what was proposed, displayed on the perimeter safety barriers around the site and thought how dreadful the artist's impression was.
Now looking at the finished product the entrance tower is even worse than I would possibly have guessed.
How on earth Co-op designers have come up with such a cheap and nasty concept is beyond me. The worse aspect is the flat roof, making the entrance porch just like an abseil tower with an overhang and with no windows or any other features to break up th bland frontage.
The building's entrance tower would perhaps be accepted in a "new town," but is a complete blunder in an old-fashioned market town as Coleford is.
If you look at the entrance tower walking from the clock tower, coming via Mushet Arch, you just want to throw up with revulsion, it's that bad.
I am amazed that the local council planning officers passed such a dreadful scheme. Were they asleep?
So I am writing this letter with the hope that at the last minute Co-op's top management might have a change of heart and at least alter the roof design of the entrance block by adding a rotunda dome, spire or belfry by adding a rotunda dome, spire or belfry to the top of the present carbuncle.
