LAST week we asked our readers if they could help solve the mystery of this team for Bernard Pendrey of Ellwood who found it among a lot of old negatives.
He thought it may have been a team from Bream but it didn’t take long for you to identify it as Valley Rovers from Cinderford.
We had dozens of phone calls identifying the team, putting names to faces and telling us it was probably taken outside the Railway pub which was the team’s headquarters.
The team was formed just after the Second World War and played its games on the field at Listers on Valley Road.
Many of those associated with the team worked at the Eastern and later Northern United collieries.
The team won several cups and were North Gloucestershire League champions too.
The people in the picture are: Bill Stephens, G Cook (treasurer), T Howells, P Davies (president), Les Baggs, L Allchurch, G Gazzard, Stan Beddis (assistant secretary), Doug Jenkins, Alf Annis, George Edwards, Cliff Watkins, Alf Wayman, Eric Knight, E Rees, Clarry Boyles, Cyril Davies, Bill Carpenter, Vernon Jordan (captain), Ralph Grindle, C Phelps, T Phelps.
Thank you to everyone who contacted us with information.
