I AM amazed that little or no protest has been raised by our district councillor regarding the closure of the tourist centre.

Back seat drivers are two a penny – perhaps I'm one – but it could be saved. If each of the district councillors gave £1,000 out of their £4,000 allowance, it would eradicate the problem.

Many of the district councillors have very lucrative businesses and many are ex public and civil service personnel and receive huge pensions, together with the ridiculous golden handshakes already tucked away in the bank.

As I see it the tourist centre is the only place in that particular sacred area which earned its corn and those that were employed there received very little by way of recompense for their loyalty. I also notice that of the white collar employees last year, another 22 per cent hit the £50k bracket. This, of course, will cost the ratepayer vast sums of money and over and above their wage, by way of pension, they will receive two thirds of their income, plus of course, the dreaded golden handshake.

I also note Tim Perrin is leaving the council. I'd love to know what his pension will be.

Whatever the case I do not expect to see him busking outside the Globe at Alvington. I could also make a further suggestion that to replace him we employ Steve McMillan who takes no prisoners.

I'm not politically motivated but if he were in charge I believe one would not have long to wait for voluntary redundancies. – Mike Meredith-Edwards, Sling, near Coleford.
