ALTHOUGH we do not consider responding to letters contained in the press to be the correct forum by which to conduct ‘official council business’ and would therefore not ordinarily entertain such, preferring individuals to approach the council direct and seek clarification in such cases rather than submitting a barrage of letters week-on-week which can be evidenced as based on ignorance and assumption rather than fact.

Lydney Town Council feels it pertinent, given the remarks made against a democratically-elected member in last week’s edition to provide your readers with the following response:

As with all such stories we remain confident in the knowledge that rational readers will apply the following considerations, namely:

•The spin on the truth which makes for a more interesting read, retains the readers interest and sells an editorial.

•The facts which are often missing, and which therefore result in a distorted account often in an attempt to deflect or apportion blame elsewhere.

•Those living in glasshouses who like to cast stones but who harbour their own personal agendas

•If we are applying transparency maybe a number of these points should be openly aired by all relevant parties?

With regard to council protocol, it is not for this council, or indeed any other council, to offer an explanation as to why a member may choose to resign – we can, however, provide a copy of any letter of resignation that has been tendered.

A democratically-elected member cannot be forced to resign.

If there has been a breach in the council’s code of conduct, the offending member may be sanctioned, ie removed from specific committee, however they would still remain a councillor as it is you, the electorate, who ultimately appoint each time you are called to cast your vote.
