RECENT pleas by both the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) and Age Concern for more helpers to deliver meals-on-wheels points to a growing volunteer crisis in the area.
Both organisations work to the same end in the Forest ... providing elderly and vulnerable people with regular square meals which they are unable to provide for themselves.
While the WRVS service acts mainly at the instigation of Social Services and Age Concern has a separate round of clients, both are regarded as lifelines without which many people would be unable to live in the comfort of their own homes.
"We do have a problem finding enough volunteers," said a WRVS spokesperson, echoing a similar statement from Age Concern last week, which described the shortage as 'a crisis'.
The commitment to both organisations can be as big or as small as circumstances allow – even an hour can make a difference to someone, somewhere.
The reward is knowing that the visit is really welcomed – more than just a delivery, it is a social call that keeps an interest going in life, people and surroundings. Real friendships spring from this.
Both organisations are facing increasing costs, too, for provisions, fuel and vehicle expenses.
Anyone who feels able to help Age Concern with a little spare time should call 01594 845621 – leave a message if nobody answers and somebody will get back to you.
