THE Fire Service team were the stars of the Lydney Poppy Appeal Skittles League this season, pipping rivals the Leftovers to top place with 119 points.

They also won the league cup with a score of 184 – and dressed up in their helmets to celebrate their win.

The presentation evening began with a silence to commemorate the sacrifice of the men recently killed in action in Afghanistan.

Lydney Mayor Martin Bowring presented the awards and thanked the organisers and participants for their hard work in raising money for the Legion.

John Saville had the top score for the men at 31 and Val Stay was the top female scorer, also with 31.

Ronnie Bryant's team were runners up in the League Cup with a score of 171 and Jo's Lot cheerfully took the wooden spoon prize for their score of 34 points!

Abergavenny entertainers Him and Her provided the entertainment.

The skittles league raised £863 for the Poppy Appeal and organiser Stanley Rudge is planning more events for the coming months. He says he would like to thank Paul Currall and Christine Wilson for the buffet.
