I WRITE in reply to the letter from Mr Meredith-Edwards of Sling (Review January 17).
I think his letter is very misguided and an insult to police officers nationwide, including the latest murdered officer in Manchester.
I understand as a victim of crime he is bitter. However he can thank the wishy-washy do-gooders who bang on about criminals' human rights for virtually tying the police's hands behind their backs.
A police officer reaches £30,000 after 14 years of service at current pay standards. Still less than a lot of business managers whose only dealings with angry people are over a phone.
Private health is only available, if like other people, police officers pay for it.
Reduced insurance rates are offered by companies who offer similar rates to other large corporate businesses.
And lastly, does Mr Meredith-Edwards know that police officers pay 11 per cent per month of their wage towards their pension. Higher, to my knowledge, than any other super-annuation scheme.
Don't knock the police, knock the politicians, our lords and policy makers who have made the fight against crime similar to a rank amateur taking on Mike Tyson with both hands tied together.
As a victim of crime I understand his concerns but wouldn't it be better if we all got behind the boys in blue and helped strengthen the thin blue line, rather than take snide pot shots at them from the safety of our armchairs? – Name and address supplied.
