AFTER months of waiting, a new pedestrian crossing has at last gone live.

People had been campaigning for a crossing on the busy Newport Road in Caldicot, near the Cherry Trees care home, and the lights were installed in April.

There were regular questions about when the lights would actually be switched on and that happened last week.

Monmouthshire county councillor, Dave Evans (Lab, West End) said: “When they closed West End (infants school) and the children transferred to the new Dewstow School, a crossing was badly needed.

“This will make the journey to school much safer.

“This is a very busy road and people would have to take their lives in their own hands to cross.”

Cllr Tony Easson (Lab, Dewstow) said: “I’ve been campaigning for lights here for eight years and I’m glad their up and running now.”
