THE Chief Constable of Gwent, Francis Wilkinson, has resigned and there is to be no hearing into disciplinary proceedings which had been instituted against him.

The clerk to the police authority Malgwyn Davies said the police complaints authority, which had been overseeing inquiries, had been made aware of the decision.

Mr Wilkinson had been suspended from duty prior to his resignation.

Mr Keith Turner, currently deputy chief constable of Dyfed Powys, has been appointed temporary chief constable.
