A DNA test has established that the body of a woman found on the edge of Wentwood Reservoir near Caldicot is that of Sandra ’Sandie’ Bowen, who was murdered 20 years ago.

Her husband, Michael, was convicted of her murder the following but it was not until 2002 that the forestry worker admitted responsibility for the death of his wife.

Catering worker Mrs Bowen was last seen on Wednesday, August 6 1997 and intially the search for her concentrated on the woods near her home in Trellech.

On Wednesday, February 1 this year a member of the public reported finding remains on the edge of the reservoir.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: “A post-mortem examination of the body has since been carried out and forensic analysis of a sample of DNA which was extracted from the bones have confirmed that the body is that of Sandra Bowen who disappeared from her home in Llandogo in Monmouthshire in August 1997.

“Sandra’s family been notified of the result of the DNA analysis and specialist officers are offering support to them.
