CYCLIST Ian Gwynne is still cycling to work after 41 years in the saddle – 25 years of that rolling 16 miles from Ross to Gloucester and back in all weathers.
"I do have a car – I've had a licence for 40 years – but I don't use it very much," said the self-effacing bike enthusiast from Hope Mansell, near Ross.
Retired from his full-time job with BT in Gloucester he now still cycles six miles each way every day to his part-time job at Ross Community Hospital, where he works as a porter – "I love the job," he says.
"However I don't think I would still do the Ross Gloucester trip today, not with the amount of traffic. You could do some of it on lanes but mostly it is on the A40 which has become very busy."
He says the fact that some of his biking friends have come to grief in recent years also makes him cautious – one close friend was killed in a collision with a lorry.
Ian said it was lucky he had a job which had shower facilities to clean up when he got to work, which made all the difference.
And he is worried that our lives are today dominated by the motor car, leading to many social ills.
"Having said that, my wife is a district nurse and she has to have a car. You wouldn't get her on a bike," he said.
