A MOTORCYCLE rider was taken to hospital by air ambulance after a crash on the A48 in Woolaston.

The road between Lydney and Chepstow was closed following the Sunday morning crash, causing long delays.

The helicopter landed on the carriageway near the Woolaston Inn, and a pub staff member said it took off again around 1pm with the male motorcyclist on board.

There were some delays as traffic was rerouted while emergency services worked at the scene.

A Gloucestershire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to the A48 near Woolaston, Lydney shortly before 11.35am on Sunday, September 15, following reports of a single vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.

“The rider of the motorcycle was taken to Cardiff Hospital via Air Ambulance with suspected leg injuries.

“The road was closed for a number of hours before reopening.”

One person Tweeted at the time: "A48 closed between Lydney and Chepstow but no one telling cars travelling towards Lydney to turnaround on the dual carriageway. Chaos on the lanes.”

Another posted: “Hewelsfield Road closed as traffic blocks up trying to take detour. Mayhem.”
