A 75-year-old woman from Lydney has been told she faces seeing her home being demolished.

Beryl Watts, lives at 7 Orchard Road, which is owned by Two Rivers Housing Association. The house has been in the family fold for 90 years and has not only seen through Beryl's upbringing but her own family's.

Beryl said: "I just don't know what to think. I have a mixture of feelings. I am sad because it's my home and somewhere that I take pride in and have many happy memories. And angry in another sense because it has taken the housing association two years to tell me that my house will be demolished."

The housing association sent a letter to Beryl in February saying that the house attached to hers is structurally unsafe, and at risk of collapse, and that they expect her home to experience similar problems in the next few years.

Her eldest daughter, Julie Jenkins from Awre, said: "Mum has lived here all her life and now she is facing losing her home. It is appalling, how can you expect a 75-year-old to upsticks and start a new life in a new home – it's just not right. Mum's health isn't great at the best of times so this certainly won't help matters.

"Both my sister, Tracy and I, have husbands who are builders and they have looked from the outside of next door's building and they both agreed that while it has cracks it doesn't warrant knocking the house down. I have asked the housing association for the structural engineers report and have yet to receive it."

The house, which is among nine properties that is owned by Two Rivers Housing Association, is the only one facing demolition in December.

Liz Reeson, Communications Manager at Two Rivers, said: "The house which is joined next door to Mrs Watt's house is not structurally sound and therefore we anticipate that this would be a problem that in time will affect Mrs Watts. While we appreciate the age of Mrs Watts and her situation, we have to take the precautionary measure because the longer we leave it the worse it might get in time."

The house next door to Beryl's has been empty since June 2011 due to its structural safety.

Beryl continued: "The house next door has been empty for two years so why has it taken the housing association that long to tell me that my house will be demolished? It was only last October that they fitted me a new bathroom, if my house is going to be demolished then why would they waste their money?"

Liz continued: "It has been the assumption that Mrs Watt's home is being demolished because the house next door has nobody living there. The reason why we haven't moved anybody in is because it would be unsafe to do so considering the state of the property structurally.

"We have time on our side to work with her on finding somewhere new to live where she will be safe and happy. We will do all we can to make alternative arrangements that she is comfortable with."

It is not known what will be built as a replacement and the scale of the development.

Liz added: "We need to look ahead and make the best use of the land to meet the needs of people in Lydney. While there are no immediate plans for the plot of land we know it will remain social housing and that the land will be made best use of to meet the needs of the people in Lydney."

The family have launched a petition against the demolition, if you wish to join forces you can do so by visiting change. org/petitions and search for stop the demolition.
