A TOWN war memorial has been granted listed monument status in time for this year’s Remembrance Day.
Thousands across Wyedean will be paying their respects on Sunday (November 10), ahead of Monday’s 101st anniversary of the Armistice, including at the newly Grade II-listed Cinderford War Memorial in the town’s Triangle.
Designed by William Leah with a sculpted figure of a soldier, the granite and Portland stone memorial was unveiled in 1923 by Field Marshal Sir John French in tribute to 19 local men who gave their lives.
Grateful townspeople raised £800 for the memorial through public subscription.
Historic England describes it “as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the church’s community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the 20th century.”
