Northern Senior League Division One
Lydney Town 3, Huntley 1
LYDNEY were made to work hard for victory over newly promoted Huntley but showed glimpses of excellent form towards the end when two goals in the final 10 minutes put the visitors to the sword.
"Credit to Huntley, they were very competitive and will hold their own in this league. They are a good side," said Lydney manager Peter Elliott.
Elliott's concern is getting Lydney to produce the form which took them to fifth place last season.
"Obviously the aim is to try and match or better that. We have not made the best of starts but we have a young squad with an average age of 21 or 22 and I'm optimistic we will finish near the top," he said.
Elliott's aim is to build on his team's moderate start. They have achieved two wins from four games and he believes there is better to come.
"Judging from early season form it looks as though Broadwell will be the team to beat. This is a competitive league for Forest clubs and with Lydbrook and Huntley in the frame there will be plenty of derby games to keep everyone on their toes," he said.
Top scorer, centre forward Mike Robins, has picked up two goals so far and will be flat out to try and match his 18 goal total achieved last season.
Kerry Price gave Lydney a one goal advantage scoring 10 minutes in the second-half. Huntley equalised with 20 minutes to go.
"It seemed to spark us into life and we were on top for the final quarter of an hour when we made sure of a win with goals by Ross Scott and Kevin Pegler," said Elliot.
