RESIDENTS living along Keynsham Lane, which runs past Woolaston Church near the Peter's Cross A48 picnic site, have to face a daily splash to get in and out of their homes.

"It has been under water for some months now," said Geoff Harris, who drives through the 100m-long stretch of floodwater at the end of Church Lane almost every day.

"We have been calling Highways regularly to get something done about it but on the latest call they said it would still take some time for them to attend to the problem.

"It is a minor inconvenience to many of us especially those with four-wheel-drive cars but one elderly neighbour who used to walk to the main road to catch the bus has been virtually housebound."

Mr Harris said the problem appeared to be a blocked culvert.

"When the lane flooded in the past a building contractor who lives along the lane got his men to clear the drain at his own expense, but since we all pay quite high rates here something ought to be done by the proper authorities," he said.

Jenny Wilks, Gloucestershire Highways Area Manager (Forest) said: "There is excess water on the road in Church Lane as the ditches need clearing. There is a planned programme of repairs in place.

"However, as everyone is aware, planned jobs have been delayed because of the extensive snow clearing that our teams had to do during the recent bad weather.

"We are now focusing our limited resources on repairing the hundreds of carriageway defects caused by the bad weather.

"Planned works, such as those for Church Lane have been postponed while this essential work is carried out.

"Gloucestershire Highways appreciates the inconvenience of the situation and we will make every effort to correct the problems as soon as possible."
