A NEWSPAPER article which claimed the head of Newent Community School has resigned was “wholly inaccurate and misleading”, parents have been told in a strongly-worded letter from the Chair of governors.

The article – which did not appear in the Review – claimed that principal Mrs Kirsten Harrison had resigned and the school could be taken back into the control of Gloucestershire County Council.

In the letter, Chair of Governors Mrs Karen Elen explained that the principal has been appointed to lead another large comprehensive school in Gloucestershire and is stepping down from her post at Newent in line with contractual requirements.

The letter states: “The school is not and will not be returned to local authority control. Indeed there is no process within existing legislation that would allow such a move.

“The school is not losing academy status and there is no evidence that the school’s status as an academy is in any way threatened.

“The governors of the school are in fact exploring its opportunities to become a multi-academy trust.”

Mrs Elen also pointed out that the school’s results have improved year-on-year since 2016 and achievement at GCSE this summer is expected to be among the best ever.
