IN response to the reader who wrote regarding the problem of parked cars in Lower High Street, Newnham, we wholeheartedly agree, and have been saying for years, that this presents a hazard with a potential accident waiting to happen.
By allowing cars to permanently park on a main trunk road, thereby narrowing the highway to single lane traffic, is absolute madness and a recipe for disaster.
The A48 is a very busy route with usage of regular bus services, heavy lorries and commuter traffic.
The argument put forward that parked vehicles as a traffic calming measure is a lame one.
By allowing this it simply introduces further dangerous possibilities. Indeed, if we start using parked vehicles as an excuse for traffic calming why bother with speed restrictions at all?
Just park where you like everyone. We'll regard it as a favour to fellow motorists!
