MY husband and I would like to thank all of the trick or treaters who were covering the ground around Mile End on Halloween.
We decided to grow our own pumpkin for carving, and after a painstaking summer of constant care for it, managed to end up with a whopping 20kg one to hack apart ready to put on display.
Collectively, about 14 hours were spent hollowing and carving all three and after the light faded and the candles were lit, they seemed to draw in quite a crowd.
Trick or treaters were up from three last year to almost 50 this year. We even had a couple of people with cameras turn up along with a few more just to tell us they 'like the big one.'
We were fortunate enough to avoid tricks and everyone was very polite – some even throwing in a 'please' at the end of 'trick or treat.' Aside from a slight miscalculation of sweet supplies requiring an emergency trip to the Co-op, we had a wonderful night, so thank-you to everyone.
We're hoping to grow a few more larger pumpkins next year for a more elaborate display, and considering the response this year we might even see about costumes. We hope to see you all again then!
R. Baker, Mile End.
