STAFF from a Chepstow nursing home took on a five-kilometre obstacle course as part of its fund-raising efforts to buy a ‘dementia table’.
The team of managers, nurses and care assistants from Castleford House nursing home in Tutshill took on the 5K inflatable run at Chepstow Racecourse on Saturday (April 24).
Ben Miller, Kate Miller, Gill Gallagher. Scott Edwards, Anna Mason and Alexis Edwards took almost exactly an hour to complete the course.
They have raised around £800 which will go to the Alzheimer’s Society, which is close to the heart of staff at Castleford and towards buying a ‘Tovertafel”.
The Dutch-made Tover-
tafel, which is also known as a ‘magic’ or ‘dementia’ table helps people who have moderate to severe dementia to take part in a range of games that stimulate both physical and social activity.
Castleford House manager Ben Miller said the table would cost around £5,500 and they have so far raised more than £2,000.
He said they had been “overwhelmed” by the support of staff, residents, relatives, the local community and the Milkwood Care head office.
“I would have been happy to raise £250 but we’ve done a very rough estimate of the sponsors offered so far and believe we’re close to £800, which is incredible.”
“We ran just like we work – together and as a team. We didn’t just come here as Castleford House to run – we also had support from staff who brought residents along to watch and enjoy the day.
“Overall it was an amazing day and I’m so proud of everyone who ran with me. The idea was initially Anna’s and once others heard what we were doing and why, they volunteered to join us.”
