SEVERAL hundred people came together for what was probably the biggest picnic in the 950-year history of Chepstow Castle.

The event, which was organised by Transition Chepstow, included displays from more than 30 local organisations, children’s activities and music from local bands and choirs.

Tim Melville, of the organising committee, said: “We had a meeting back in October and this is the result – people wanted something with a community feel.

“It’s probably the biggest picnic ever to be held at Chepstow Castle – Cadw (the Welsh Government agency which runs it) have been brilliant.

“It’s brought a lot of people together and it’s been fantastic fun.”

The Mayor of Chepstow, Cllr Dale Rooke joined Ruth Frett,  the head of St John’s-on-the-Hill School in Tutshill, to decide on the best historic, best green and most healthy picnics.

The Hawkridge family of Woodcroft won the historical section with their William Tell theme, Vicky Yates won the most healthy spread while Becky and Marcus Perrin were judged to have the most green picnic.

The winners received vouchers for the Herbert Lewis department store, Marks and Spencer and  Stone Rock Pizza.

Ms  Frett said: “It was an impossible ask to judge the picnics.”

There was also music from Chepstow Choral Society, Chepstow Community Choir, Chepstow  Male Voice Choir, Chepstow Musical Youth Theatre, Jig of Slurs and Offa’s Tykes.

The picnic is one of a large number of events at the castle this summer to celebrate its 950th anniversary.
