POLICE arrested five teenagers on suspicion of stealing a car and burglary after a chase on foot through woodland.

The incident happened shortly after dawn on Sunday morning, January 5, after a car which had been stolen from an address in Rogiet was involved in a crash with another vehicle nearby on the B4245 Caldicot Road.

The police helicopter was also involved in the search and two girls and three boys aged 14 to 16, including a 15-year-old girl and boy from Caldicot, were subsequently detained.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “At around 8.30am on Sunday 5th January 2020, we received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Caldicot Road in Rogiet.

“The driver and passengers of the one vehicle ran off from the scene into the nearby woodland area and were later detained by officers.

“Following investigations, the one vehicle involved was found to have been stolen earlier from an address in Rogiet. No injuries were received by the driver or passengers of either vehicle.

“Five people have been arrested; a 14-year-old girl from Rogiet, a 15-year-old girl from Caldicot, a 15-year-old boy from Caldicot, a 15-year-old boy from Newport, and a 16-year-old boy from Newport.

“They were all arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft and have been released under investigation.”
